Tent-Makers

And he [Paul] found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, having recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. He came to them, and because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and they were working, for by trade they were tent-makers. (Acts 18:2-3)

While we recognise that Paul, effectively a travelling missionary, was a tent-maker and plied his trade wherever he could in order to support himself while preaching the gospel in far off lands, this site is not dedicated to such modern-day missionaries, but to the Aquilas and Priscillas in the local community. These are those who are part of the body of Christ in the local setting, plying their trade locally, while being the church of Christ in their local communities, bringing the Kingdom of God into the lives of their neighbours. Yes, there is a need to reach the world for Christ, but bringing Christ to the world doesn't necessarily mean travelling to a distant land - for most, it is about blessing and praying for those around them every day, whether it be at home, at the local shops, at work, while playing sport, and so on.

It is hoped that this site will become a virtual hub and meeting place for those every day Christians plying their trades in their marketplace. The intention of the site is to:

  • Offer a place for those Christians who work, whether in their own business or as an empoyee, to find support from other "tent-makers", whether it be to get help with work-related matters, to get prayer support when you are facing a challenging time at work or when you are quoting or tendering for your next job, to find another tradesperson to help with a job you are working on, or to help others in any of the above areas.
  • Allow for Christian business and tradespeople to advertise themselves to the wider Christian community, since there are many Christians who would like to help out their fellow bretheren in the faith when they need work done.
  • Arrange and advertise physical meetings, such as breakfasts or lunches, where local "tent-makers" can get together to meet each other and find out more about each other's businesses or trades, and where short teachings and other useful presentations can be made to help those gathered in their businesses or in their walk with the Lord.

If you can identify with any of this, and would like to know how you can help make this concept a reality, please contact Mike on info@tent-makers.co.uk.
